In the search of my own path I’ve began to realize that goal setting, motivational speeches, inspirational websites are a trend right now. Everywhere there is a life inspiring quote posted as a status update, or an action that may transform our way of thinking in a split second, but that may or may not make a permanent difference in our lives. Whether we are part of this “group” whose goal is to achieve a better way of life or not is not the question – what is most important for each individual is to honestly choose their level of commitment and make a conscious decision not to be on the fence line. Each individual should be able to undoubtedly decide whether they truthfully want to better themselves or whether they just want to follow a trend without any commitments or attachments. So what – you may ask – what’s the difference? Either way you are being inspired. But – are you?
The main difference between an unshakeable commitment and a trendy enthusiasm is the vulnerability level that’s attached to both sides. When you are committed to yourself, to making changes, to living a better life, there is nothing and no one that can get between you and your purpose. Your desire to move towards a goal will strengthen as you explore the transition from where you are to where you want to be. Individuals following this journey have the determination to resolve every issue, handle every obstacle that comes their way, stay focused and get to their destination – whichever that may be. They are inspired to keep moving ahead towards their most desirable goal. They enjoy the journey as they move along, and acknowledge that the path is not always going to be the easiest to travel.
The path of following a trendy dedication, on the other hand, is based on an unbalanced foundation. It’s filled with insecurities and second guesses about the desire to change. It’s guided by other people’s principles and ideas of what our purpose should be; which can lead to a larger gap between the path that’s being followed and the true path that we could be passionate about. This disparity can lead us to a path of unhappiness, ungratefulness, loss of ourselves; it can even affect individual’s health to a point where it is very hard to control. Individuals following this path allow their designated leader or peers to set their destination, the ground rules, and even their emotional state throughout their journey. More than a support system, they seek a “person in charge” outside themselves, who to follow and who is willing to show not only a journey but a destination that may or may not be the right one for the follower. This particular way of handling the journey may work for a short period of time but the motivation may quickly fall through as the gap between where we are headed and where our inner soul truly wants to go grows apart.
There is an obvious difference between true commitment and trendy enthusiasm for change. It is up to each individual to decide which they want to follow. Become aware of the differences in outcome and then make a firm decision as to which side you chose to be. You owe it to yourself!
